The popular remixer lost his battle with brain cancer.

Grammy-winning DJ and dance music producer Peter Rauhofer has died on Tuesday at age 48, according to a message posted to his Facebook page. The cause of death is brain cancer.

“Today the music industry has lost one of its true heroes,” the announcement from manager Angelo Russo reads. “He passed quietly today and is survived by his mother, Helga, who resides in Austria. She will transport Peter back home to his final resting place there, but to all that knew Peter, his heart will always be in New York City.”

Born in Vienna, Austria, Rauhofer conquered the New York gay dance club scene in the 1990s with his pulsating, high-energy remixes of songs by divas like Cher, Britney Spears and Madonna.

Rauhofer reigned for years over the turntables at the Roxy nightclub, the massive dance space in Manhattan’s Chelsea’s district that held weekly bacchanalias on Saturday nights. The club shuttered its doors in 2007, and with it the era of NYC megaclubs drew to a close.

Rauhofer won a Grammy Award in 2000 for Best Remixer of the Year for his popular remix of Cher’s “Believe.”
